Owing
largely to its important geographical position,
Volusia County has enjoyed a rich and diverse
history. Situated between the St. Johns River
and the Atlantic Ocean, Volusia County has been
important to Florida’s heritage since the first
days of man.
Volusia
County has continued to play a significant role
in Florida’s development. Many archeologists
believe that Volusia County may be as important
to British Colonial era history as St. Augustine
is to the Spanish era.
Volusia
has been home to a wide variety of farming
endeavors since the days of the first Europeans.
Preserved mill ruins show the important role
that sugar production once played here. Volusia
County was also at the center of Florida’s
steamboat era on the St. Johns River. Get to
know Volusia County and you’ll see it’s richly
steeped in history.
